I’m currently doing some work for a client in the finance industry, the Association for Financial Markets in Europe, and part of it is writing a glossary of terms for their intranet and website, as like most organisations they have their own language. As I was ploughing my way through the latest definition I realised that my experience of multiple sectors means that I am actually multi-lingual, and there was me thinking I only spoke one language!
Never was this more evident then when a former colleague and now good friend came over for dinner recently and we were chatting about one of our clients: my husband had a look of utter bewilderment on his face and said “All I can hear is letters and acronyms, you two are making no sense!” Which made me realise that is exactly how I feel in my first few weeks in a new role – so take heed all organisations and if you don’t already have one create an A-Z to help your staff and clients understand what on earth you are talking about!
